Managing Technology

Technology has a way of taking on a life of its own. Left unmanaged, I.T. (information technology) costs grow out of control while focus on the mission is lost.

The trick is to ride the technology wave just behind its crest: you want to take advantage of new technology, but not be so far out in front that you're crushed by the wave.

Set goals

To win at I.T., you need a clear strategy. Define milestones at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 years from today.

Be prepared for change

Once your goals are defined, employ tactics that will achieve your goals. You'll need to adjust your tactics as technologies change. I find that decisions that I made just six months ago often make no sense in today's environment.

John Dvorak says about I.T., "Whatever you learned this week will be null and void next week."
